Choke Canyon Reservoir was impounded in 1984 with 25,670 surface
acres. It is located just 4 miles west of Three Rivers, Texas and
65 miles south of the City of San Antonio. This reservoir lies
within both Live Oak and McMullen Counties and impounds water from
the Frio River.
The conservation pool elevation is 220.5 ft. with a fluctuation of
10’ to 15’ with a normal clarity of clear to slightly stained water.
Predominate aquatic vegetation in Choke includes American Pondweed,
Coontail, Rushes, Cattails, and Hydrilla, along with various types
of habitat including steep rocky banks, flooded timber, shallow
brushy flats, and creek channels.
Numerous species of fish have been stocked in Choke Canyon, such as,
alligator gar, white bass, crappie, catfish, largemouth bass, and
perch, although the most popular being largemouth bass and catfish.
